Matiniah Yahya and her husband James Jones have established the first Islamic transitional house to support Muslims leaving prison in New Haven, CT.  Matiniah and James are long time activists and educators in academic world and in the local and national community.  While I lived in New Haven they were involved in educating new Muslims, marriage counseling for community members, establishing educational programs for children and adults, and ecumenical outreach projects in New Haven through Masjid al-Islam.  They are an important part of the Masjid's work to transform the community.  Now Matiniah and James have they have established this transitional house to give at least a few of our brothers in prison the chance to make their return to the community lasting and healthy.  God protect them and help them in all their hard work, and let the blessings of this project fall to Malik, James' son who was unjustly killed by the New Haven Police, for whom the project is named and increase his light in the next world.

Program Overview

The Islamic Transitional House is an Islamically centered sober house designed to provide individual adult males with a drug-free bridge to a more stable, productive life. The House strives to offer each person a safe, peaceful, contemplative environment emphasizing study, holistic self-development, family stability, community improvement and gainful employment. We believe strongly that if a person lives by good morals and values and shares them with others, the world would be a better place for all to live. The House is a private human service organization that serves all those in need, regardless of race, color, or creed. The program is based on the following Core values: Commitment, Character, Caring, Communication, Community, Constancy and Change as reflected in the teachings of the Qur’an and traditions of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him). The intent is to develop a model program that can be replicated in other communities.

The Islamic Transitional House and Masjid al-Islam are seeking donations.
