The Human Rights Project at ProgressiveIslam.Org
follows in the steps of the United Nations Declarations of Human Rights
in recognizing the inherent dignity, equal status, and inalienable
rights of all human beings regardless of race, gender, sexual
orientation, religion, language, political or other opinion, national
or social origin, property, birth or other status. We believe
that the Qur'an and other sacred and secular sources of human
enlightenment affirm this inherent dignity of humanity and call for
justice and compassion to guide us in upholding the rights and
obligations that human beings hold towards each other.
Justice and Compassion are two of ninety-nine attributes of God named
in the Qur'an. In the Qur'an we find that God is both Just and
Compassionate, both Majestic and Beautiful. God calls our
attention to these complementary characteristics in ourselves by
reminding us that we are made in the Divine Image. In us, the
divine attributes are our human character traits. We have been
given the freedom to use them responsibly to protect and care for each
other, as God and the highest aspect of our selves would have us do, or
to use them capriciously to oppress and harm one another, as the lowest
aspect of our selves would have us do. Heeding the responsibility
given to usby God through these virtues we intend to use this web-site
to discuss and document violations of the rights of human beings within
the Muslim community world-wide.
In keeping with the precept that one should clean one's own house
first, it is the goal of The Human Rights Project at
ProgressiveIslam.Org to focus on crimes committed from within our
community by Muslims against other Muslims or non-Muslims because of
race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, language, political or
other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth or other
status. It is our intention to bring to light the harm we do to our own
faith community and the human community at large.
At this point in time in history we cannot afford to cover over our
wrongdoings against ourselves and others for the sake of
self-protection from a sometimes hostile non-Muslim world. Our
self-protection will only come by telling the truth about ourselves.
Hiding our wrongdoings now is only destroying a way of life that has
nourished us since the time of the Prophet Muhammad, alayhi
salam. We must transform our ourselves, and in doing so the
community of humanity itself, by enacting the justice and compassion
towards others that was commanded to us by God.
In this, we ask for both, your understanding and your participation. Insh'Allah, we will do our faith and the Ummah proud.
